Ellsworth Community College (17-14, 6-6) took care of business in the regular season finale and on sophomore night.
The Panthers recorded a sweep of Iowa Lakes Community College by scores of 25-22, 25-23 and 25-14. With the win, ECC secured the sixth seed and would travel to DMACC for the Region XI-B Semifinal on Saturday.
The hosts were slow to start the match and found themselves down early in the first set. An Anthea Deweer tip evened the score for the first time and a Deweer kill gave the hosts the advantage. The Panthers then went on a scoring spree to go on top 15-10 and wouldn’t trail the rest of the set. The opener was secured, 25-22, on an Aubrey Johnson kill.
In similar fashion the Lakers (11-21, 4-8) opened game two on a roll and ECC did not take the lead until 7-6 on a double block by Giovanna Marins and Deweer. That jumpstarted the hosts who then went on a 5-0 run. The two would be even seven more times in the set, the last one at 22-22. Madi Hughston had the leading point and the Panthers would get the 25-23 win on a service error.
The beginning of the third set was more back and forth with four tied scores before ECC took full control. With Adriana Tiedt behind the service line, the Panthers scored 14 points in a row, that included three aces. That scoring spree allowed them to pull away to a 17-5 advantage. Later ECC recorded match point on a service error and earned the sweep on a kill that landed outside the lines.
