Saturday night Ellsworth Community College faced 15th-ranked Butler Community College and fell by an 86-0 final.
The Panthers averaged less than a yard (0.1) per carry on the ground and finished with two yards rushing. Butler finished with 389 yards on the ground and 157 through the air.
The Grizzlies had 11 different players reaching the end zone in the victory – including two blocked punts that were returned for scores. While the hosts only had to punt once and recorded 32 first downs for the contest, the Panthers moved the sticks seven times and punted 11 times.
On Butler’s first offensive possession they went 60 yards down the field and capped the drive with an 11-yard run. ECC moved the ball down the field with the help of its second longest play of the game – a 35-yard pass from Drew Paulakovic to Donte Ferrell – and they were just inside the red zone. Attempting to get on the board, Ben Denton’s field goal try was blocked and recovered by the Grizzlies.
Trailing just 7-0, Jalen Riley nabbed a Dylan Dunn interception to give the visitors the ball again but the ECC offense went three and out. On fourth and 10 from their own 33, Justin Anderson’s punt was blocked Levi Wittenberg went six yards in for the score. Other than the one interception Butler quarterback, Dunn, had a hey day with 109 passing yards to seven different targets. He scored the next three touchdowns of the quarter, two through the air and one on the ground.
The second quarter was more of the same, with two more rushing scores. The Panther defense did hold the hosts to a field goal late in the stanza. With eight seconds left to go before the half, another blocked Anderson kick, this one by Isaac Martin, resulted in six as Butler led 58-0 at the break.
The second half was better for ECC defensively, keeping the Grizzlies to just one touchdown in the third period and three in the fourth. But they just could not get the offensive engine ignited.
