Offense stopped short in road loss

Ellsworth Community College traveled to 13th-ranked Coffeyville Community College on Saturday and struggled in all three phases in a 52-7 loss.

The hosts tallied 518 total yards on offense – nearly even between passing (254) and rushing (264) while possessing the ball for 35 minutes. The defense recorded a fumble, two interceptions and four sacks against the Panthers. The ECC ground game finished with just 18 net yards.

The Panthers (3-6) gave up a big play to start the game as the Red Ravens (5-3) scored on a 42-yard pass from Mac Armstrong to Michael Kenon within three and a half minutes of the game starting.

The hosts scored two more touchdowns in the half, including another 20 yarder by Armstrong to lead 21-0. ECC's defense did a better job in the second quarter of keeping the hosts out of the end zone and trailed 28-0 at the break.

To start the second half, Panther running back Deandre Rutherford fumbled the pigskin to give the hosts a short field. On three plays Coffeyville reached the end zone once again as the advantage swelled to 35-0.

Trailing by six scores, ECC finally got on the board in the third period. Starting with a 47-yard pass from Armoud Seals to Jesse Abruscati, the Panthers moved the ball 75 yards to reach the end zone. On third and goal from the eight yard line, Seals connected with Shane Helmick for six and the point by Ben Denton after made the score 38-7.

Coffeyville would add two more touchdowns in the final quarter to reach their final tally.

ECC is off this week and then will finish out the season at second-ranked Iowa Western on Nov. 15.
