Ellsworth Community College trailed Dodge City Community College until the final quarter of the game. The Panthers scored 15 unanswered points to pick up their first win of the season, 15-8 over the Blue Dragons.
Dodge City scored first. With the help of a pass interference call, on the next play connected on a 39-yard pass. The two point conversion failed, but the Blue Dragons led 6-0.
Dodge City score again, late in the second stanza. ECC started their drive on the 23. A bad snap pushed them 10 yards further back and another bad snap went into the end zone. Kvonte Baker got the ball and tried to get beyond the goal line, but was tackled for a safety.
Neither team could score points until the fourth quarter comeback by ECC.
That was followed by a big run by Shaundarious Kimbrough was helped out with a defensive facemask by the Blue Dragons – moving the ball inside the 20.
On second and nine from the 14, Marice Whitlock got the ball in the back field and danced his way across the goal line. Whitlock then ran in the two-point conversion and the game was tied 8-8.
The Panther defense then got the ball back. Faced with a first and 20, DC grabbed 15 yards but did not get the first down and were forced to punt.
The kick went away from Matthews, but he knew that in order to get the win, somebody had to make a play. So, he went with his gut – scooped the ball up and ran down the sidelines.
He blew by the Blue Dragon defense and hit pay dirty. Though ECC missed the extra point, they held their first (and final) lead of the game.
