Ellsworth Community College basketball player Tonnie Collier set a new school record with eight blocked shots on Nov. 30 against Labette Community College, and he was just one point shy of tying a Panther record for points scored, tallying an impressive 50 in the game. The record of 51 points scored in one game has been on the books since 1961.
"Tonnie played his best all-around game as a Panther that afternoon," commented Head Coach Troy Muilenburg. "If there is such a thing as a quiet 50, he had it. I didn't realize he had such a monster game until I was actually handed a copy of the score book a half hour after the game."
Collier, a forward, was a factor at both ends of the floor, also contributing 9 rebounds in the first loss of the season for the Panthers (103-104).
"It couldn't have happened to a better person," said Muilenburg. "As our co-captain Tonnie is always preaching that the team needs to stay focused and be humble, and he personifies that on the court."
A native of Milwaukee, WI, Collier is a criminal justice major at Ellsworth Community College. He hopes to transfer from ECC and finish his collegiate basketball career at a four-year university.
